Curt, Very pleased to report that your experience with Akai capstan motor failures has likely saved my GX-266D a transcontinental trip for replacement of a $1 part. Following your explicit instructions below, I ordered the transistor you specified and with the help of a knowledgeable friend, we replaced the transistor along with fresh heat sink compound and the capstan motor is again spinning. I have not yet threaded tape, but i imagine capstan speed will be stable and correct, unless you feel that the new transistor may require some speed calibration. Thank you for offering the detailed information you did, and for backing Phil up on my deck.
